Meditation can help pupils be more compassionate and less distressed. But many districts are prepared to sign on?
More and more studies are revealing direct connections between health and meditation benefits. A study found that only eight weeks of meditation training was as effective as drugs in treating pain, stress, and depression.
At Harvard, scientists using neuro-imaging technology demonstrated how meditation absolutely impacted the brain action of the chronically stressed, a state the Benson-Henry Institute reports is related to more than 60 percent of all physicians visits.
When a school in New Haven, Connecticut, needed meditation and yoga courses three times weekly for its incoming freshman, studies found that after each course, pupils had significantly reduced amounts of cortisol, a stress hormone, inside their bodies.
Where the plan didn’t exist on the California Achievement Test had twice as many students score proficient in English in San Francisco than in similar schools. Visitacion Valley Middle School specially reduced suspensions by 45 percent during the plans first year. Presence rates increased to 98 percent, grade point averages enhanced, and the greatest well-being degrees were recorded by the school on the yearly California Healthy Kids Survey in San Francisco.
Other studies show that instruction programs that were mindfulness improved pupils self control, respect and attentiveness for other classmates, enriched the school climate, and teachers that were improved dispositions.
While Silent Time isn’t the final solution for a broken education system, its a game-changer for many pupils who might have become dropouts. Thats reason enough to make meditation a school basic, and not only in San Francisco.
